In the Bleak Midwinter

Choir of Kings College, Cambridge

The choir of Kings College Chapel, Cambridge sings the lovely Christmas carol, In The Bleak Midwinter. The tender words of Christina Georgina Rossetti are sung to the music of Gustav Holst.

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,
In the bleak midwinter, long ago.

Our God, heaven cannot hold Him, nor earth sustain;
Heaven and earth shall flee away when He comes to reign.
In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ.

Enough for Him, Whom cherubim, worship night and day,
A breastful of milk, and a mangerful of hay;
Enough for Him, Whom angels fall before,
The ox and ass and camel which adore.

Angels and archangels may have gathered there,
Cherubim and seraphim thronged the air;
But only His mother, in her maiden bliss,
Worshipped the beloved with a kiss.

What can I give Him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part;
Yet what I can I give Him: give my heart.

    1. YES! To me it represents the tender, reverent, humble, more contemplative side of Christmas –– something too often neglected in the hurly burly of the brash, coarsely materalitic, increasingly secularized world of today.

      For me Christmas has always been the greatest Source of Hope and the possibility of Joy. This blessed GIFT from GOD is available to all mankind, if only we, as individuals, see fit to ACCEPT it.

      And His mother only in her maiden bliss
      Worshipped the Beloved with a kiss.

      How often do we stop to realize that AFFECTION ––– not SEX –– is what we need most, and that our only hope of receiving it is to give it unstintingly?

      MERRY CHRISTMAS!

    1. And the same to you, dear friend. I have long felt that, despite all the hideous challenges we must face, Civilization will continue to thrive as long as the boy choir of Kings College Chapel continues to maintain the high standards of devoted musicianship for which they are world-renowned.

      Merry Christmas to you and your husband, and may God bless you in the New Year with renewed faith, greater hope, healing and brighter prospects for the future!
