~.~.~.~ A Slice of Fruitcake ~.~.~.~

A fragrant spiced creation permeated ––
Studded –– with translucent candied fruit ––
Loads of nuts and currants unabated
Immersed in Yuletide’s buttered rich brown suit.
Cinnamon and ginger –– maybe cardamom ––
Enliven flour sweetened with molasses
Or butter and brown sugar with a tot o’ rum.
Figs and dates might join these festive masses.
Flour’s kept at minimum amounts
Rich and sticky candied orange peel,
Unstinting preserved fruits that no one counts
Intoxicated in the batter reel
Tots of Brandy added ensures making
Cake to get the angels' tastebuds aching!

  1. Nice acrostic sonnet, Franco. Was it inspired by a fruitcake you got this year?

A former blogger friend of mine (not TMW) makes fruitcakes every year and sends them to friends. This year, I got four! All of them, albeit small, promise to be delicious -- as usual. I sampled one as soon as the first batch of cakes arrived.

Not everyone likes fruitcake, of course. Perhaps an acquired taste?

    1. Believe it or not I was COMMISSIONED to write it for a Christmas Party given by an admirer in California. She specifically asked me please to feature fruitcake, so of course i did. I saw no reason not to post it here, even though I'm not tha big a fan of fruicake, myself. Much prefer traditional English-style steamed plum pudding with brandied hard sauce, myself. ;-)

I like to think I could fashion an acrostic sonnet on just about any subject.

"In Your Stocking" might be next, who knows?

      <];^}> HO HO HO!

      MERRY CHRISTMAS!

    2. I'm more of a "stollen" or "panettone" person, myself. Bread is "lighter" than cake.

    3. ps - I like how the acrostic added to the last line ALSO go well together!

    4. Someday I hope to write a sonnet where the LAST letter in each line conveys a coherent message. THAT'S even harder than writing a Villanelle.

I'm not even sure it could be done, BUT one must have a challenge or two on the horizon lest the mind begin to atrophy.

    1. We are taking a much-needed break from political bickering and denunciation to honor "The Holy Tide of Christmas." If you don't feel like joining us in that, please at the very least do nothing to distract or deter us from our purpose which is to express Joy and Gratitude for for being newly made aware each year of the Birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

A time we must reserve and set aside for awe, reverence, merriment, and find recollection of past Christmases..
